In November 2005, leading environmentalists joined together to advise newly elected Mayor Villaraigosa on how to dramatically transform L.A. into a national leader in environmental health and equity. With initial support from Liberty Hill and Environment Now, GREEN LA was incubated at Liberty Hill and grew to include over 100 organizations.

While GREEN LA was housed at Liberty Hill, the coalition:

1. Secured $400 million for low-income communities with too few parks.

2. Helped launch L.A.'s Green Business Certification Program.

3.Helped win the nation's most sweeping new Green Building policy.

4.Helped increase L.A.'s green purchases and services by 25%.

5.Helped develop an ambitious plan to reduce the City of L.A.'s greenhouse gas emissions by 35%. President Obama's national plan, announced in 2009, was modeled on the standards adopted in Los Angeles.

6. Insured that Measure R, the landmark transportation bond, prioritized bikes and pedestrians, not just cars.
