Advancing Equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians. As the marriage equality movement gained steam, Liberty Hill was at the frontlines of change, investing in education and outreach to strengthen support for equality in communities of color. Prop 8’s passage only intensified our determination to advance full equality. Since November 2008, we have invested in town halls, trainings, important public opinion research and leadership summits to strengthen support for equality. Environmental Justice. Liberty Hill was first to fund L.A.'s environmental justice movement. Since 1996, Liberty Hill has spearheaded investment in environmental justice organizing, bringing money and intensive, on-the-job leadership training to community leaders working in some of L.A.’s most polluted communities. Today, every Californian breathes easier as a result. We’ve won millions of dollars in pollution reduction programs, as well as new safeguards to protect the health of Californians most exposed to pollution’s deadly consequences. Green L.A. In 2005, Liberty Hill was asked by leading environmental activists to engage our environmental justice grantees in an exciting effort to implement an ambitious environmental policy agenda for L.A. With strong interest from more than 100 environmental organizations, GREEN L.A. was born in 2006 and organized around key policy issues in the areas of energy, transportation, the Port, urban parks, environmental justice and the “green economy.” Liberty Hill incubated the coalition, playing a major role in facilitating and organizing initial dialogues, raising financial support and supervising the staff of the coalition.
