Maria Brenes, Propelling Education Reform in East Los Angeles

Byline: Rebecca Rona-Tuttle

Maria Brenes, executive director of InnerCity Struggle, will receive the Wally Marks Changemaker Award Thursday, May 20, at Liberty Hill’s Upton Sinclair Dinner.

“Changemaker” is an apt description of Maria. It’s taken years of organizing, but, led by Maria, students and parents have seen that they can be a force for change: Esteban Torres High School, the first school built in East Los Angeles in 80 years, will open its doors this September. It wasn’t easy.

Recently Maria, eight months pregnant, shared her views about education in East LA. Watch the video on Liberty Hill’s homepage.
