Rent Freeze Passes in L.A. County

Our collective activism and philanthropic support recently powered a significant victory: the Board of Supervisors approved a temporary rent freeze for unincorporated L.A. County. 

The motion will cap rent increases at 3% annually and mandate fairer eviction practices. As a result, 200,000 tenants can now find relief from rising rents while the Board of Supervisors considers permanent regulations. This is the largest expansion of rent stabilization in decades! 

We are proud of how Liberty Hill’s grantmaking, activist training and alliance-building efforts fueled the coalition that made this victory a reality. We helped bring together a diverse alliance of tenants and activists who worked tirelessly to advance this campaign. We extend congratulations to our community partners, including Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE), Los Angeles Center for Community Law and Action (LACCLA), Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), L.A. Voice, Housing Long Beach, Uplift Inglewood, InnerCity Struggle, Pomona Economic Opportunity Center, and the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project. 

Prior to the vote, over 100 people mobilized for a rally and made public comments. Moving testimony from tenants and advocates was essential to securing the temporary rent freeze. Supervisors Kuehl and Solis, who proposed the motion, were joined by Supervisors Hahn and Ridley-Thomas to approve it. 

With our Agenda for a Just Future, Liberty Hill is addressing three of the region’s greatest injustices by eliminating neighborhood oil drilling, ending youth incarceration as we know it and fighting for a roof over every head. The temporary rent freeze is one important step forward in the fight for housing justice—but there is always more work to be done. Our focus now shifts to the state level, where advocates across California will be fighting to repeal restrictions that limit local government’s ability to protect tenants and ensure stable rents.
