Since its founding in 1976, Liberty Hill has sought to build deep relationships with grassroots organizations and leaders in underserved communities and to support them and help them grow through good times and bad. These are the voices and organizations who have formed the backbone of progressive change in Los Angeles, and who are leading protests and essential conversations as we grapple with structural racism in our society.

Our frank and lively discussion with 82nd Attorney General Eric Holder was moderated by longtime Liberty Hill supporter and Champion Mitch Kamin. The event helped set the stage for the battles to come in the November election. Attendees expressed valid concerns about everything from voter turnout to disenfranchisement, and were willing to dive into these issues to discuss solutions and the way forward.  

The Liberty Hill Foundation along with California Funders for Boys and Men of Color, Executive Alliance for Boys and Men of Color, and Funders for Justice, in collaboration with the Congressional Black Caucus, joined forces this month to host a lively discussion on Criminal Justice During COVID-19. The focus of the event was to highlight the current state of the movement to reinvest funds away from ineffective punitive measures like incarceration and towards proven models of re-entry, prevention and diversion. 

As the global pandemic reshapes how we all live, youth justice community organizers are fighting for the release of youth from youth jails, especially after two youths in Los Angeles County’s juvenile halls tested positive for the novel coronavirus this week after Probation officials began testing youth entering the system.

Earlier this month Liberty Hill convened an L.A. Organizers’ Virtual Town Hall that brought together more than 100 organizers and activists across L.A. County to share and strategize around the COVID-19 crisis and how we can best support the needs of our communities on the ground.

Our Ready to Rise partners are busier than ever -- providing enhanced mental and emotional health services, peer support groups, virtual learning, as well as financial and food assistance. These expanded services are meeting critical needs for families in crisis and youth coming home from lock-up.
