Community Funding BoardStrategic Investment Through Grantmaking

The Fund for Change is Liberty Hill's primary competitive grantmaking program. Its grants provide vital unrestricted funds that community led organizations need to build power. The Fund for Change focuses on four priorities: economic justice, racial justice, environmental justice and LGBTQ justice. Liberty Hill provides "seed" grants as well as grants to mature organizations with a track record of community organizing and policy wins. The Fund for Change is administered through process that brings in the volunteer Community Funding Board (recent members pictured) to assess organizations best able to advance campaigns. In addition, the Special Opportunity Fund makes a small number of grants on a case-by-case basis in response to urgent opportunities. Tactical support is extended through special funds including The Racial Justice Rapid Response Fund, The Fund for Environmental Health and Safety, and The Fund for Economic Equity and Dignity. See our video "Who Decides Who Gets the Grants and Why?"

Leadership Training

Grassroots Leadership TrainingThe Wally Marks Leadership Institute For Change provides intensive on-the-job training for community organizers. Grassroots leaders of our grantee partner organizations are eligible to apply for participation in training tracks that enable them to develop practical skills they need including Community Organizing, Base Building, Grassroots Fundraising, Board Development, and more. This program has dramatically accelerated the organizational capacity and effectives of L.A.'s progressive grassroots nonprofits. Liberty Hill's Commissions Training Program is transforming local commissions by giving community leaders the tools and training they need to work with these powerful government agencies as advocates and as candidates for seating.

Liberty Hill brings allies together, forges a common agenda and advances winning campaigns for change. We support three active L.A. area coalitions: Brothers, Sons, Selves (leadership development for boys and young men of color); Clean Up, Green Up (groups advancing a "Green Zone" environmental justice policy) and Stand Together Against Neighborhood Drilling (an environmental justice coalition of community groups protecting Angelenos health and safety by standing up against neighborhood drilling).
