OUR APPROACH: Liberty Hill is a public foundation founded in 1976 to power social change from the ground up by fueling grassroots community organizing. Every dollar invested in community organizing yields a $90 return in community benefits through progressive policy change. We support organizers who are tackling injustice with our three-pronged strategy, involving:
- Grantmaking. Liberty Hill's unique approach to grantmaking ensures that social justice organizations have the resources they need to win campaigns and defend underserved communities. With input from seasoned activists, policy experts and academics, Liberty Hill awards grants to L.A.'s most effective grassroots groups. At the same time, our rapid response funds can move money fast in times of crisis or opportunity.
- Leadership Training. When it comes to fighting for justice, leadership matters. Through Liberty Hill's Wally Marks Leadership Institute, we help rising organizers and activists develop crucial skills, from building successful campaigns to financial management for nonprofits. With the Commissions Training Program, Liberty Hill prepares community leaders to serve effectively on L.A.'s many influential boards and commissions.
- Alliance Building. Liberty Hill works at the intersections of philanthropy, grassroots organizing and public policy, forging powerful relationships and building coalitions between funders, activists and policymakers. Coalitions established by Liberty Hill have influenced everything from school discipline practices to environmental regulations.
- Agenda for a Just Future. Liberty Hill launched the Agenda for a Just Future to fight for our youth, our health and our homes with three focused campaigns. We believe we can stop incarcerating kids, ensure adequate affordable housing for every Angeleno and end the oil drilling that sickens our region's poorest communities.
In order to maintain excellence and ensure long-term sustainability as the home for progressive philanthropy for Los Angeles, Liberty Hill is embarking on an ambitious multiyear plan (2020 – 2023) to increase its annual individual donor revenue by $1 million. Reporting to the SVP, Chief of People and Advancement (CAO), the Major Donor Organizer (Major Gifts Officer – MGO) will play an integral role in this next phase of individual donor development at Liberty Hill.
Responsible for growing and sustaining meaningful relationships with donors contributing $10,000+ annually, the MGO is an entrepreneurial, creative, and relational leader committed to promoting social change philanthropy in Los Angeles. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to work cross-functionally among diverse internal and external stakeholders. They will envision and secure long-lasting results through in-person relationships built on a firm understanding of LHF major donor interests, passions and values. They will consult with LHF staff and donors to build robust prospect pipelines from existing lower level donors and other sources such as LHF giving circles and donor advised funds.
The qualified candidate will possess keen comprehension and passion for major annual fundraising, and demonstrate seasoned experience in individual giving within a non-profit organization. The MGO will lead design and implementation of formal major giving programming at LHF, working closely with Advancement staff, CEO, and board to plan new events and/or elevate current activities.
In addition to fundraising, the MGO will fulfill an important role as an organizer for Liberty Hill major donors. They will actively steward donors, engaging them on opportunities such as activist led campaigns and activities when appropriate. The MGO will help donors embody the donor-activist ethos, recognizing the power of activism alongside philanthropy. The MGO will work with the CAO, CEO, Events Manager, and other internal/external stakeholders to plan and execute donor-centric events and activities throughout the year.
The MGO will work standard business hours, Monday-Friday, weekends, and evenings as necessary and based out of the Liberty Hill offices in Los Angeles. The MGO will spend most of their time outside the office cultivating meaningful relationships with donors, creating lasting impressions to build loyalty.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for designing and implementing a major gifts program to grow revenue from individuals giving $10,000+ annually.
- Grow personal portfolio of 100 donors over three years, with an ability to know when to deploy other staff, especially the CEO, for further cultivation and stewardship.
- Collaborate closely with the CAO and CEO to craft major donor cultivation and stewardship events.
- Responsible for communicating effectively with donors through face-to-face solicitation and stewardship meetings, as well as written and e-communication strategies.
- Develop a recruitment and retention plan for major donors, working closely with Director of Individual Giving to track and report moves management metrics.
- Responsible for the analysis of performance of major donor campaigns and appeals and planning for future appeals and/or cultivation activities.
- Collaborate with Advancement and Communications staff to plan and execute annual appeals, including direct mail, online giving and social media.
- Participate in the development of budgets and monitoring expense related to the major donors program.
- Maintain accurate tracking of donor communications and actions, and prepare regular reports on all campaign activities.
- Minimum of BA level degree in a related field.
- Minimum 5 years or more of professional experience with a proven track record of initiating, stewarding, and moving individual gifts to higher levels of support.
- Innovative thinker, with a record of accomplishment for translating strategic vision into action plans and output.
- Excellent relationship-building skills, with a dynamic capacity to inspire new and existing donors to give.
- Goal-orientated, positive attitude, self-directed, passionate and motivated.
- The ability to execute on fundraising plans and strategies that generate significant results.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills; including the ability to develop and strengthen internal and external relationships.
- Excellent project and process management skills and attention to detail
- Exceptional customer service orientation: anticipate and respond promptly and professionally to requests and needs from all key stakeholders.
- Collaborative work style, and the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment.
- Experience with a fundraising software.
- Passion for social justice and LHF mission.
- Experience working within a political/social justice/advocacy environment.
- Individual Giving experience working within a relevant mission is highly desirable.
- Advanced degree.
- Manual dexterity for operating a computer keyboard, printer, facsimile machine, photocopier, calculator and/or ten-key adding machine.
- Ability to sit at a desk or conference table for extended periods of time within an office environment.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
- Extensive travel in L.A. County required. Must have valid California Driver's License and an insured and reliable vehicle.
