Liberty Hill's work is focused on Los Angeles County, however we understand that what happens in L.A. influences the nation. In this historical moment, we believe it is especially important for Los Angeles to be a beacon of social justice nationwide.
OUR APPROACH: Liberty Hill is a public foundation founded in 1976 to power social change from the ground up by fueling grassroots community organizing. Every dollar invested in community organizing yields a $90 return in community benefits through progressive policy change. We support organizers who are tackling injustice with our three-pronged strategy, involving:
- Grantmaking. Liberty Hill's unique approach to grantmaking ensures that social justice organizations have the resources they need to win campaigns and defend underserved communities. With input from seasoned activists, policy experts and academics, Liberty Hill awards grants to L.A.'s most effective grassroots groups. At the same time, our rapid response funds can move money fast in times of crisis or opportunity.
- Leadership Training. When it comes to fighting for justice, leadership matters. Through Liberty Hill's Wally Marks Leadership Institute, we help rising organizers and activists develop crucial skills, from building successful campaigns to financial management for nonprofits. With the Commissions Training Program, Liberty Hill prepares community leaders to serve effectively on L.A.'s many influential boards and commissions.
- Alliance Building. Liberty Hill works at the intersections of philanthropy, grassroots organizing and public policy, forging powerful relationships and building coalitions between funders, activists and policymakers. Coalitions established by Liberty Hill have influenced everything from school discipline practices to environmental regulations.
- Agenda for a Just Future. Liberty Hill launched the Agenda for a Just Future to fight for our youth, our health and our homes with three focused campaigns. We believe we can stop incarcerating kids, ensure adequate affordable housing for every Angeleno and end the oil drilling that sickens our region's poorest communities.
As a key member of Liberty Hill's Youth Justice team, the Program Associate (or the "Associate") will support efforts to end youth incarceration, as we know it, and establish a youth development system in LA County. Specifically, the Associate will coordinate youth justice initiatives and projects with activists, foundations, and government partners. The position will also play a key role in managing the day-to-day operations of the My Brothers' Keeper Los Angeles Collaborative and assist with overall implementation of related programs and priorities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Overall Youth Justice Duties
- Coordinate a variety of initiatives and projects that advance youth justice in Los Angeles County. This will include supporting the My Brother's Keeper Los Angeles Collaborative, the California Funders for Boys and Men of Color, our Public-Private partnership focused on youth development, as well as youth justice grantmaking, capacity-building, and advocacy efforts.
- Provide support for youth justice team, including project tracking, coordination of meetings, vendor/consultant contract agreements, program reports, grants oversight, planning.
- Attend internal youth justice meetings and external gatherings, such as conferences or site visits. Take note, prepare timely meeting summaries, and perform required follow-up activities.
- Develop meeting agendas and produce/update all relevant documents as needed. This will include preparing materials and handouts for internal colleagues and external partners.
- Plan and organize youth justice events; this may include logistics such as booking venues and ordering food, as well as content such as selecting and confirming speakers.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with community partners, peer funders, government allies, and other external stakeholders.
- Support youth justice staff in drafting and implementing grant proposals.
- Participate in the grantmaking process; review grant applications, draft application project descriptions for input into the Liberty Hill database, prepare reports for the grant determination meetings, participate in determination meetings with Program team members.
- Assist Director and Senior Manager to manage youth justice expenses and program budgets.
- Conduct research on youth justice policies, youth development models, and funder priorities
- Track activity of policymakers engaged in youth justice
- Help identify resources and tools that could be helpful to the youth justice team in pursuing its goals and implementing its programs
My Brothers' Keeper (MBK) Los Angeles Collaborative
- Serve as project coordinator for the My Brother's Keeper Los Angeles Collaborative, in partnership with the Director of Youth Justice. This will include developing a master work plan designed to ensure timely accomplishment of each project milestone.
- Play a key role in the facilitation and coordination of collective efforts to support of the advancement of the MBK efforts within Los Angeles County.
- Serve as key point of contact for each partner organizations and stakeholders (non-profit partners, government officials, private companies, etc.) involved in the collective impact effort to advance the LA County work as outlined in the grant proposal.
- Maintain close communication with MBK community partners, foundations, and County staff.
- Draft correspondence and field inquiries related to program implementation.
- Fulfill requests from Obama Foundation related to grant management, under the supervision of the Director of Youth Justice.
- Support data collection and evaluation efforts related to Obama Foundation grant, in coordination with Director of Youth Justice.
- Participate in meetings and national gatherings with the Obama Foundation MBK Alliance and its designated contractors.
General Liberty Hill Foundation Responsibilities
- Actively participate as a member of the Liberty Hill Program team, including participating in Foundation meetings, attending team meetings and collaborating with team members.
- Work with the Communications Department to draft content for social media, newsletters, website, printed collateral, publications, videos, and other communications-related needs.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Experience with programs and practices related to youth development.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively present information and engage in interpersonal dialogue in a one-on-one setting as well as with small groups.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries from partners, applicants, grantees, contractors and members of the community in a timely manner.
- Excellent time management, ability to plan ahead and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently, take direction and exercise sound judgment within a team in a small office setting on special nonrecurring and ongoing projects.
- Analytical, problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse communities and life experience.
- Ability to maintain a positive, professional interactions with others.
- Must be proficient in Windows, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and internet use.
- 2-5 years related work experience, with community organizing, policy and program implementation and project management experience.
- Existing working relationships with racial equity and social justice organizations in Los Angeles.
- Track-record of effective meeting facilitation.
- Public speaking experience.
- Knowledge of basic fundraising and donor relations processes.
- Manual dexterity for operating a computer keyboard, printer, facsimile machine, photocopier, calculator and/or ten-key adding machine.
- Ability to sit at a desk or conference table for extended periods of time within an office environment.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
