Community Partners Ramp Up The Fight for Housing Justice

One of the core aspects of our Agenda for a Just Future is our commitment to fighting for a roof over every head. As part of that housing justice work, we have also supported organizations working to ensure fair treatment of tenants who face the risk of eviction during these uncertain times.

LA Community Action Network (LA CAN) and Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE) are two long time Liberty Hill partners who have been leaders in the fight to ensure tenants facing eviction have access to the same legal services as landlords. They have been leading the Right to Counsel–LA (RTC-LA) coalition since its formation in 2018. RTC-LA advocates for a codified right to counsel across all of L.A. County, meaning that every tenant who faces eviction would receive free legal defense.

StayHoused LA County

Stay Housed L.A. Launches To Help Renters Know Their Rights [VIDEO]

Los Angeles renters have faced a housing crisis for many years, but it has exponentially intensified with the onset of COVID-19. Over half a million people are estimated to have lost jobs in the last six months, making rent even harder to pay. Scholars estimate that close to 350,000 people in LA County are at risk of eviction

Renters must know their rights and have the ability to exercise them. That’s why Liberty Hill has partnered with longtime housing justice organizations, legal service providers, and the LA County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs to launch Stay Housed LA County. Stay Housed LA County aims to educate tenants on their rights and connect qualifying tenants to the right legal service provider for them.

B.L.A.C.C. Giving Circle Encourages Collective Philanthropy & Voter Engagement

The belief in the collective power of individuals to come together to create change is a cornerstone of our work at Liberty Hill and it extends to our dedicated Donor Activists who form the core of our philanthropic support. Our Giving Circles are groups of individuals, corporate representatives and philanthropic partners who come together to pool their donations to make a greater impact on the social justice issues they care about. Liberty Hill's Giving Circles provide members with an opportunity for hands-on community activism and collective strategic philanthropy.

As the pandemic hit and the racial justice uprisings spread across the country, the  members of the Building Leaders and Cultivating Change (B.L.A.C.C.) Giving Circle sprang into action and began planning ways they could get involved.

Guest Op-Ed: Supreme Court LGBTQ Ruling is False-Flag Victory by Candex

We are excited and eager to share this opinion editorial, authored by one of our participants in this summer’s Wally Marks Leadership Institute Op-ed Training. The training was hosted by Liberty Hill in conjunction with our partners at Fostering Media Connections. It was designed as a three-part online opinion editorial workshop to provide youth activists with the technical knowledge and support to craft editorial pieces that uplift their unique and important perspective on relevant topics affecting them and their communities.

Candex, joined us through Gender Justice LA, an organization dedicated to building the power of the trans and gender non-conforming community in Los Angeles. We were beyond impressed with the young adults who shared their time and writing with us.
