For 37 years, Liberty Hill’s Upton Sinclair Awards Dinner has been the premier gathering for those at the epicenter of progress and justice in Los Angeles. Every year, political allies, donor-activists, grassroots leaders and community organizers from across the region come together to celebrate the progress made in fights for social change. This year, we honored three dynamic leaders and organizing icons who have paved the way for progress in our community—former Liberty Hill executive director Torie Osborn, Senator Holly J.

This year Liberty Hill is honored to recognize three amazing individuals with awards at our annual Upton Sinclair Award Dinner. Our honorees truly demonstrate the spirit of our gala theme–Our Movement, Our Moment. Their collective contributions have paved the way and extended the path for activists and organizers across many diverse movements over the years. We are honored to celebrate their work and accomplishments. 

Talking Community, Arts and Access with Liz Levitt Hirsch

Liberty Hill is pleased to honor Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch with the Founders Award at our 2018 Upton Sinclair Awards Dinner on April 19. The recognition is given to individuals whose philanthropy embodies the spirit of “change, not charity” and whose exceptional generosity is helping to realize equality and justice for all.

A Letter from Shane Murphy Goldsmith on Brothers, Sons, Selves

When Liberty Hill launched the Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition in 2011, in partnership with The California Endowment and 12 grassroots community groups, there was a problem we could not ignore: L.A.’s boys and young men of color were in crisis.

For too many, school was a pathway to prison and not college. Graduation rates for our young men of color were significantly lower than their white counterparts. Unemployment was high and life expectancy was low.
