For too long, LA youth have been failed by a deeply harmful system. SB 357 gives LA County additional tools to address the ongoing crisis in our local youth jails. By granting the Board of Supervisors the option to delegate some functions of Probation to the Department of Youth Development (DYD)—which was created to meet the needs of youth—we have the opportunity to empower the DYD to begin to address the failures of our broken justice system.
SB 357 passed through the CA Senate – no small feat! Now it needs to be passed in the Assembly Public Safety Committee, and eventually on the Assembly floor, without amendments that would lessen its impact.
The CA State Assembly’s Public Safety Committee will be discussing SB 357 on July 15th – please take action now!
