Ivette Alé-Ferlito
Ivette Alé-Ferlito (they/them) is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of La Defensa. Ivette has been organizing and leading anti-carceral campaigns in California for nearly a decade. Their lived experiences as a queer, formerly undocumented person, as the child of a formerly incarcerated person, and as a survivor of violence, have informed their approach to movement building. They have helped found and lead multiple coalitions, including JusticeLA and ReimagineLA, supporting historic victories including ending LA County's $3.5 billion jail expansion plan in 2019 and the passing of Measure J in 2020, which secured hundreds of millions of county dollars for community investment. They previously served as Policy Director at Dignity and Power Now and Statewide Coordinator at Californians United for a Responsible Budget. They also serve as the Chair of LA County’s Gender Responsive Advisory Committee, and on the Public Safety Realignment Team. Ivette is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a BA in Political Science, a Women’s Policy Institute Fellow, and a UCLA Law Fellow. They bring a depth of organizing experience that spans well over 15 years.
Ivan Hernandez
Ivan Hernandez was born and raised in the City of Pomona. Growing up in the city he experienced firsthand the lack of investment in youth and families from local city leaders. Living in a community that didn’t prioritize the needs of underserved populations led him and other young people in the city to take action into their own hands and incubate the Pomona Kids First (PKF) initiative which will combat the continuing legacy of systemic racism and the damaging effects of the pandemic by establishing a sustainable funding stream that will address the structural and environmental conditions that drive harmful behavior in children, youth and families and supplement rather than supplant existing funding or programs. Ivan currently serves on the steering committee of Pomona Kids First and develops campaign strategy for the initiative.
