We believe in Green Communities
Los Angeles currently has some of the worst air quality in the nation, but low-income communities of color face an even larger pollution burden.
On Earth Day, 2016, Mayor Eric Garcetti signed a groundbreaking environmental justice policy known as Clean Up, Green Up that establishes green zones in the pilot neighborhoods of Boyle Heights, Pacoima and Wilmington—communities that have been overburdened by pollution.
The goal of Clean Up, Green Up is to implement solutions to minimize the overconcentration of environmental hazards in overburdened neighborhoods, reduce pollutants, and help businesses adopt greener practices while creating more jobs.
Our partners Communities for a Better Environment, Pacoima Beautiful, Union de Vecinos, and Coalition for a Safe Environment began planting seeds for the policy almost ten years ago.
The targeted neighborhoods contain a concentration of pollution sources adjacent to residential areas such as schools, playgrounds, and homes, raising the risk of pollution-related illnesses—asthma attacks, heart disease, respiratory distress, cancer, and premature death.
