Building Capacity & Investing In Emerging Leaders
Named in memory of longtime Liberty Hill donor-activist and Board member Wally Marks, the Wally Marks Leadership Institute is a value-added benefit for organizations that receive a grant from Liberty Hill.
Through a combination of customized retreat-style training, one-on-one coaching and multi-group peer strategy sessions, the Leadership Institute moves beyond “incubating” organizations to accelerating their growth through an “organizational immersion” approach.
This specialized training and peer-learning is designed for the campaigns and memberships of grassroots organizations.
Workshops, technical training and coaching are designed to strengthen organizational infrastructure and the leadership base of community partners.
Our Commissions Training Program is part of our Wally Marks Leadership Institute and prepares leaders throughout L.A. for participation in more than 250 boards and commissions that oversee city and county agencies.

Commissions Training Program
Liberty Hill’s Commissions Training Program trains community leaders to become advocates within local government structures and prepares them to serve on city boards and commissions.
I applied for the Commissions program because I felt limited in my ability to truly advance equity for youth in Los Angeles. The program taught me the practical skills needed to engage in commissions work, but more importantly, it empowered me to own my expertise and utilize my knowledge effectively in my quest to advance equity.
