Through our Environmental Leadership Initiative (ELI), Liberty Hill continues to harness community power to protect hard-won progress and defend communities most impacted by environmental injustices.

Recently, Liberty Hill collaborated with consulting partners Cities & People, AORTA, and Being Collaborative to host the 2025 ELI Fall Convening, a transformative three-day gathering designed to foster dialogue, build community, and deepen engagement between ELI fellows.

Held at the breathtaking Half Moon Bay on California’s central coast, the convening united two cohorts of fellows from across the state—from Plumas Lake and Yuba to La Quinta in Riverside County.

Over the course of the convening, fellows engaged in coaching, panel discussions, restorative workshops and offerings, as well as group reflections meant to strengthen relationships within and across cohorts. Fellows got the chance to connect with the ELI Advisory Board members and local EJ leaders, engaging in intergenerational dialogues exploring the history and future of environmental justice leadership.

The convening also honored Cohort 1 fellows in their final gathering, while offering restorative and healing activities that left participants reenergized and ready to lead in their own communities.

This month, we closed applications for Cohort 3, inviting a new group of dedicated organizers, activists, artists, cultural bearers, land stewards, and educators to join this two-year immersive program. Participants will deepen their understanding of Environmental Justice principles, engage in collective movement-building, and develop the skills necessary to create lasting impact through learning modules, collaborative projects, mentorship, networking, and personalized coaching.
