Protecting LA Renters: Stay Housed LA Five Years Strong
We know that the work we invest in today shapes the Los Angeles we will inherit tomorrow. Stay Housed LA is a powerful example of how long-term, community-driven solutions take root when institutions work hand in hand with grassroots leaders.
Serving residents from Lancaster to Long Beach, Stay Housed LA exists to protect and defend renters, ensuring tenants have the resources, information, and legal support needed to stay in their homes and assert their rights.
Since launching in 2020, Stay Housed LA has become a lifeline for vulnerable renters facing often-unlawful eviction attempts. Across the Los Angeles region, the initiative has provided legal services to more than 33,000 tenants, represented over 11,000 tenants in court, and provided Know Your Rights information to more than 2.3 million renters through workshops, calls, texts, and in-person outreach.
The model works because it centers community through an integrated program that includes legal services, trusted community-based outreach, and a 14-language hotline and website connecting people to a network of 12 legal aid providers and 16 community-based organizations.
Over five years, the initiative has secured $67 million in short‑term benefits like rent forgiveness, relocation assistance, and fee waivers. It has also generated another $75 million in long‑term savings by helping tenants stay housed, along with more than $18 million in rental assistance for nearly 2,000 households. These dollars remain in the communities where renters live, work, and raise families.
This work is only possible because of the visionary leadership of community partners who refuse to accept a Los Angeles where renters are disposable. As a strategic partner, Liberty Hill helps steward this initiative—aligning resources, uplifting the expertise of frontline organizations, and strengthening the long‑term movement for housing justice.
