Community Power in Action
At Liberty Hill, we are dedicated to supporting frontline organizations, campaigns, and movements that are empowering communities and creating meaningful change throughout the region. In this new chapter of LA’s social justice journey, organizers are proudly embracing their power to safeguard their achievements, stand strong against challenges, and above all, keep pushing towards a more just and equitable Los Angeles.
Free the Youth Rally
Youth activists and organizers from Liberty Hill’s Liberation Fund—including the Young Women’s Freedom Center, Youth Justice Coalition, and Students Deserve—gathered at the LA County Hall of Administration for the Free the Youth Rally, an inspiring show of youth empowerment. The community-led action centered the youth voices in the fight to end incarceration of girls and gender-expansive youth. The long-term goal is to serve young people outside of settings geared toward punishment and incarceration and instead provide robust community-led support in coordination with the Department of Youth Development. We know that youth cannot thrive and develop in incarceration but that there is a foundation of organizations Liberty Hill has been supporting for decades that have built a robust alternative ecosystem to serve kids well. Liberty Hill proudly supports these organizers who are laying out the foundation to end youth incarceration in California, with the potential to be replicated nationwide.
EJ Ready Learning Lab Launch
This year, Liberty Hill and the Resources Legacy Fund launched the EJ Ready Learning Lab series—a powerful new initiative supporting EJ Ready grantees as they advance solutions to the climate crisis in Los Angeles. The interactive series focuses on creating Resiliency Centers, community-centered facilities offering safe spaces and resources during climate events, economic hardships, or social pressures. These centers will provide emergency preparedness, mental health support, educational and job training programs, community-building activities, and assistance for youth and families. The seven-part learning series dives into planning, design, program development, and implementation. By the end, participants will be equipped to plan, design, and bring their own Resiliency Centers to life.
Ready to Rise 2025 Cohort Summit
This year, Liberty Hill and the California Community Foundation hosted the Ready to Rise 2025 Cohort Summit, a powerful gathering of grantees, partners, and community leaders united by a shared goal: fostering positive youth development and driving systems change. Now in its fifth year, Ready to Rise has grown into a $50M initiative, providing critical funding for community-based youth development services and capacity building to 100 grantees in LA County. The program, which emerged from our California Funders for Boys and Men of Color Southern California initiative, plays a vital role in supporting system-impacted youth with supportive services that offer an alternative to incarceration. At this year’s summit, grantee partners shared how this innovative program has strengthened their organizations, elevated youth leadership, and broadened community impact. The energy in the room was truly inspiring—a reminder that real transformation happens when we invest in community-led solutions.
Helping Communities Survive & Thrive After LA Fires
Following destructive wildfires in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades, Liberty Hill’s grantee partners united to assist affected communities across LA County. From the start, frontline organizations like Social Justice Learning Institute, Inner City Struggle, the LA Community Land Trust Network and Pasadena Organizing for Progress actively connected with those impacted, offering vital support and resources. Their efforts made it easier for affected residents and business owners to access emergency assistance services, financial support, and mutual aid. We extend our deepest gratitude to all the organizers, activists, and volunteers whose bravery, resilience, and generosity shine as a source of hope.
Housing Advocates Begin Measure A Implementation
Housing justice advocates came together to support implementation of Measure A in LA County—a major milestone in ending homelessness and providing housing, care, and stability for our unhoused neighbors. This innovative measure was backed by The Bold New Way, an incredible coalition of 200+ community-based organizations and labor groups, including Liberty Hill partners like United Way of Greater Los Angeles, Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance, SAJE, LiBRE, ACCE, LA Voice, Our Future LA, and many others. Together, they rallied millions of voters to ensure its passage. With the support of this historic coalition, Measure A will help keep people housed, sustain homeless services, create well-paying union jobs, and build thousands of new affordable housing units for Angelenos.
