Grantmaking Principles

Ex: Social Justice Learning Institute to support travel scholarships for youth to testify in Sacramento.

Truth

Efforts that are grounded in the liberation of Black people, acknowledging the need to equitably shift the power relationship between black and white populations.

Ex: Los Angeles Black Worker Center and their efforts to increase access to quality jobs for  Black workers.

Strength

Efforts that support the capacity of Black people to mobilize our individual, collective and community assets toward systemic change.

Ex: Yes on Measure J, integrated voter engagement efforts in the Black community (SCOPE, Black Women for Wellness and California Calls Action Project), the Mother’s Day Bailout Campaign (LA CAN)

Strategic Disruption

Efforts that boldly confront conditions that perpetuate inequity, from narratives that justify racial difference, indignity and oppression to policies that reinforce the same.

Ex: A New Way of Life Re-Entry Project to support services and legal advocacy for formerly incarcerated women seeking to reunify with their children.

Love

Efforts that facilitate avenues by which Black people can pursue self-and-community care to heal from the trauma of systemic racism.
