Stay Housed LA Update

Our support for tenants rights is more important than ever. Liberty Hill Foundation partners with legal service providers, government agencies, and grassroots organizations to help vulnerable renters understand their rights and the resources available to help them retain housing. Stay Housed L.A. launched in 2020 to connect tenants with community organizations and legal service providers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stay Housed L.A. is a collaboration between Liberty Hill, 14 community-based organizations, 10 legal service providers, the L.A. County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA) , and the City of Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD). Community organizations in the program have collectively talked with more than 500,000 tenants to better understand their rights and legal protections, and have hosted over 600 know-your-rights workshops attended by over 12,000 people. Stay Housed L.A. has been featured by the White House as a national model for eviction prevention, and remains one of the only eviction defense and prevention programs in the country to do extensive outreach and education in partnership with non-legal community based organizations.

Our advocacy partners on the frontlines work with tenants across the county facing eviction, displacement, or housing crises every day. Stay Housed L.A. staff report seeing an uptick in tenant harassment complaints such as landlords conducting construction at all hours of the night or refusing to turn on the water or address pest infestations. These reports helped our partners win the Tenant Anti-Harassment ordinance, which prohibits such actions.

Despite our tenant education efforts, thousands of residents still face eviction. Stay Housed L.A. continues to ensure residents are aware of their rights and know where to find support. Liberty Hill is proud to work alongside all of the organizations in Stay Housed LA.
