We Are Not Powerless: Standing for Justice After Tragedy

Liberty Hill Foundation mourns the fatal shootings of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother killed by a federal ICE agent in Minneapolis, and Keith Porter, a father shot and killed by an off-duty ICE agent in Northridge. Both deaths are painful reminders of the real human cost of aggressive immigration enforcement and the fear it sows in families and communities.

As news of these and other atrocities fills our social media feeds, one truth rises above the grief: you are not powerless — and you can make a difference.

Across our city and across the country, brave grassroots organizers, immigrants, and their families are responding, not with silence, but with extraordinary courage — holding vigils, leading protests, supporting impacted families, and demanding accountability. Their work on our streets every day is building the safer, more just future we all deserve — and they need our support.

If you would like to get involved and support immigrant rights organizations leading critical frontline work happening right now, click here to learn more and join the movement.

We stand with the loved ones of Renee and Keith, with those organizing vigils and rallies, and with all who are calling for transparent investigations and systemic change. Their lives—and the lives of countless others affected by immigration enforcement and violence — matter.

At Liberty Hill, we believe that organizing, advocacy, and collective action can change systems and save lives — including through policies that protect community safety and dignity here at home.

We also recognize this moment as a critical opportunity for local leadership — including the upcoming discussion by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on creating “ICE-free zones” on county property to protect residents from federal enforcement operations without judicial warrants. This local action underscores how community power and policy change can advance dignity and safety for all Angelenos.

Our hearts are with the families who’ve lost loved ones and with every community fighting for accountability, justice, and a future where no family lives in fear. Together, we are not powerless — we can make a difference.
